There’s a new employee in town and if you’re not familiar with them, you should be.
The job market isn’t what it was 20 years ago – or even 10 years ago. Anyone who has looked for work in the past couple of years knows the game has changed. Across the proliferation of social media, diversifying needs of individuals and penny pinching efforts by companies such as the exportation of jobs over-seas and contractual employment, a life-time career with one company simply no longer exists. Gone are the days of the static resume and working your way up through the ranks of one corporation; Instead, a new age of employment has arrived. One that’s leaner, meaner and a whole lot more competitive.
I call this era, the age of “The New Employee”. Whether you’re looking to develop a career with a global corporation, a local boutique firm or even to start your own company, the rules have changed and you’d better change with them or you’ll quickly be left behind in the socio-economic EI dust.
What the hell am I talking about? Let me explain.
Since graduating from university I’ve found my friends (and myself) struggling to make a foot in our respective industries. Looking closely at this, and referring back to my 15 years of employment that I labored away in before returning to school, I see the job market, and those who participate in it, has shifted. Old technologies – classified ads, resumes, the interview – have largely gone the way of the do-do being replaced by company targeted websites, well developed LinkedIn profiles and convoluted hiring processes like interview brain teasing.
Ultimately, The New Employee is someone who must look for work in creative ways that catch up with our ever expanding technologies and the ways we engage in the world. We spend over 12 hours a day interacting with each other through screens – televisions, game consoles, computers and a countless array of mobile devices. Target marketing , using traditional marketing techniques to get employers attention, or defining your potential audience’s avatar are no longer strictly marketing propaganda but instead apply to anyone looking to put a roof over their head (never mind paying their student loan bills).
Welcome to the future; It’s yours.
We need to re-think and re-imagine our employment process. We need to evolve.
The bad news? …As university graduates -returning or new – rack up thousands upon thousands of dollars of debt for our education, we’re the first generation facing a less prospective future than our parents. In the entire course of human history
The good news? …The unfortunate fact that who you know often matters more than what you know becomes slightly less unfortunate in the era of The New Employee. Social media technologies allow us to get into the periphery of just about anyone. Whether that be clients, employers, your favorite stars or the neighbor down the street, we have unlimited access to pretty much anyone, anywhere, anytime. This opens doors in all kinds of ways that in the pre-social era, would have been utterly impossible.
So now what? …Get out there. Stop waiting for old technologies to hand you the job in a new-techno world. DIY. Start networking and developing the tools you need to land that dream job or gold client. Re-imagine what employment and job searching looks like and innovate. Make an impact. The thing is, we’re all educated now and we have more or less the same credentials. Make yourself stand out and grab that job by the balls (or ovaries). Make. It. Happen.
